Abstract

Digital technologies, when integrated into teaching with pedagogical intent, can lead to significant advancements in teaching and learning. Artificial intelligence is included in this context, making it necessary to address it in teacher training so teachers can reflect on its implications for education. This article presents reflections on how artificial intelligence, combined with the development of statistics and statistical education, can support the critical and pedagogical training of future mathematics teachers. A workshop was conducted as part of initial teacher training, integrating generative artificial intelligence and other digital technologies with concepts from statistical education. This workshop was motivated by ongoing discussions about generative artificial intelligence and its role in training mathematics teachers, as well as the increasing need for civic education in a data-driven society. The results indicate that Statistical Education promotes critical thinking as an essential component of training, since shifting the focus from cognitive processes to Generative Artificial Intelligence produces the opposite effect. The conclusions suggest that practices integrating Statistics Education and Digital Technologies can serve as a starting point for the Statistical Literacy process, a lengthy process that should be included in mathematics degree programs.
