Abstract

Generative Artificial Intelligence is becoming increasingly present in everyday life, influencing various aspects of daily routines in ways that are not yet fully understood. This impact is also felt in education, modifying teaching and learning processes and bringing with it new possibilities and limitations. Therefore, this article discusses the process of appropriation of this technology by mathematics teachers from Rabardel's perspective. To this end, we use Instrumental Genesis as a theoretical framework and discuss aspects associated with the teacher's Personal and Professional Genesis. As a result of reflection on the Instrumental Genesis process, we propose a guided activity that uses the tool as an instrument-for-thinking-mathematics-with. Finally, we conclude that a fundamental part of the construction of the Generative Artificial Intelligence instrument by the user concerns the schemas in the creation of prompts, since the user-artifact interaction occurs through them. Regarding Professional Genesis, the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence brings new complexities and specificities to mathematics education, requiring the proposition of new tasks and forms of evaluation, as well as forms of use that foster critical thinking and active learning for the student, not turning the tool into a simple problem solver.
