His study addresses the challenges and perspectives of school management in public schools, highlighting the essential role of managers in the organization and functioning of educational institutions. Based on the analysis of data collected through questionnaires applied to ten principals of public schools in São Mateus/ES, the work investigates how managers face the main obstacles in their roles and identifies practices that can contribute to school management, promoting quality education based on the principles of democratic management. The results show that although managers play a central role in coordinating teaching staff, students and the school community, they face significant challenges, such as a lack of financial resources, an overload of administrative tasks and resistance to change. These factors limit the autonomy of managers and hinder the implementation of innovative and effective practices. Despite this, the responses obtained highlight positive aspects, such as the possibility of promoting collaborative actions, training teachers and engaging the community. The conclusion is that balance in the choices made by managers, combined with ethical and collaborative leadership, is essential to overcome challenges and promote an inclusive and transformative educational environment. Furthermore, an analysis of the responses shows that there is a need for greater autonomy and support for managers so that they can carry out their role more effectively and in line with the contemporary demands of education.
