Representative democracy in practice: report on the development of the democracy, citizenship and political representation project with high school students

This paper presents a report of the project Democracy, Citizenship and Political Representation, carried out in 2017 and 2018 in five public schools in Santa Maria/RS. The project had the participation of 401 high school students and 51 students of the Degree Course in Social Sciences of the Federal University of Santa Maria. The objective was to provide the approximation of high school students with the definitions and functions of political institutions, of the political power exercised in the instances of representation, through practices of discussion and theoretical understanding and the exercise of debating, expressing understandings, choosing representatives and deliberating, approximating theory, perceptions and contexts, generated an involvement with political institutions.
