Abstract

This article discusses the discursive functioning of comics based on the notion of graphic enunciation. It problematizes Eisner’s (2010) concept of “sequential art”, arguing that comics should not be understood as a hybridization of text and image, but as a specific system of meaning production. To support this perspective, contributions from comics studies, particularly Groensteen (2015) and Marion (1993), are brought into dialogue with the reflections of Foucault (1988), Pêcheux (2010), and Orlandi (2012) on processes of meaning production. The article argues that meaning in comics emerges from the articulation between graphic elements, spatial organization, and discursive materiality.
