Abstract

The transpositions of literary works into other arts can be described as products of intertextual relations, paraphrases, considering that they 'draw from' their source text. However, they are also characterized as production, as they are structured based on the author's interpretations. From this perspective, regarding comic books adapted from literary texts, it is theorized that some of their visual resources enable new perspectives that add to the meanings of the source work. Thus, considering the potential of this medium to promote visual and critical readings (through recontextualizations), it is proposed that they are suitable for fostering multiliteracies, a didactic approach that encompasses multiplicity in terms of media, discourses, and meanings. With this goal, the present research developed a comparative study using the adaptation of the short story Os Porcos, written by Júlia Lopes de Almeida and adapted into comics by Verônica Berta. To this end, the theoretical contributions of Soares (2009) and Rojo; Moura (2012) were used, focusing on multiliteracies and literacy in schools. The works of Will Eisner (2010) and Alberto Ricardo Pessoa (2016) on comic book narrative, as well as the propositions of França (2017), Santos (2017), and Williams (1995) regarding theories of female gothic, were also referenced. As a result, it was observed that the adapted work, as well as the source text, presents a characteristically gothic setting, which not only adds to the literary text but also reinforces its meanings, thus enabling an imagistic and sociocritical reading in the process of forming multiliterate students.
