A corpus-based analysis of ten Brazilian Portuguese translations of Henry James’ novel The Turn of the Screw: lexical groups and the translator’s style

This study analyzes ten translations of The Turn of the Screw (Henry James, 1898) to investigate differences in the use of lexical groups (LGs), defined as recurring sequences of words (Simpson-Vlach and Ellis, 2010), considered indicative of the translator's style. The GLs of four elements were extracted from the source and target texts and their frequency was analyzed. Significant variation was observed in the number of different GLs in the translations, which is consistent with the data on lexical variety in the 10 target texts. This suggests stylistic choices by the translator, as an attempt to enrich the translated text.
