Abstract

This paper examines the intersection between money and visuality in “The Real Thing” (1892). Entangling themselves in Henry James’s short story, both elements characterize the creative space as subversive. In order to explore that, we will also discuss the essay “Black and White”, originally published in 1889. While incorporating commercial aspects, the text builds on illustration to formulate an artistic conception already developed in “The Art of Fiction” (1884), which underpins the author’s interest in unravelling the relationship between the pictorial and the verbal.
