The mourning diary of martim: A reading of a noite da espera by milton hatoum

Abstract

This article analyzes the perspective of mourning, as a maternal affection loss, in the narrative A noite da espera by Milton Hatoum. Having as basis the structure of Hatoum’s diary narrative, three topics will be worked on throughout this article: time and forgetfulness, the affective and corporeal complicity between mother and son, and the attempt to overcome the mother loss through writing. In constant dialogue with this article, the book Diário de luto by Roland Barthes offers us the theoretical support for this analysis.
