Abstract

This paper aims to discuss the “American autobiography”, by Dany Laferrière: ten self-fictional novels that narrate his journey through the American continent. I point out to the strategies chosen by the author to narrate the encounter with the Other, with cultural diversity and transcultural experience; how the act of gazing (or the sensation of being gazed at) is essential to the discovery of alterity, to the subjective elaboration of the “self” (of the narrator) and to the construction of the writing itself (and of the writing of oneself).
