Abstract

In this paper, I aim to address two central questions regarding Leo Strauss’s thought: first, what is political philosophy for Strauss? Second, what does it mean to “return” to the Classics? This approach will serve to highlight the aspects of “ancient political science” that Strauss seeks to revive, as well as the specific philosophical meaning he assigns to this notion of return. My hypothesis is that, for Strauss, the return to the ancients functions as an experimental recovery of key elements of classical thought—particularly its investigative (zetetic) character—which shaped the distinctive relationship between the philosopher, the ordinary citizen, and the statesman. I therefore conclude that Strauss’s project involves reclaiming a radical mode of thinking and rearticulating enduring the permanent problems.
