Abstract

This article focuses on a specific segment of a PhD-level investigation within the area of Scientific Accessible Language. It explores the reading and comprehension of adapted texts to young individuals (aged 12+), combining teaching experience with academic research. The ebook Aprendendo sobre virus e vacinas, by Editora da UFCSPA, is used as input. In our view, revising the original material could be considered a form of simplification. When reviewing with the goal of making texts simple, we focus on vocabulary, syntax, semantics, word order, etc. This approach aims to create texts that are clear and straightforward, in an effort to contribute to the development of Scientific Accessible Language. The analysis was conducted using texts from our corpus with the aid of the tool MedSimples, developed by the research group Scientific Accessible Language, of UFRGS. This tool provides users with alternatives for simplified writing. The results showed that the ebook uses many technical terms and difficult words to explain the concepts, which may pose comprehension challenges for the young audience. In view of that, simplified versions are being proposed.

Mestre em Estudos da Linguagem, na linha de pesquisa Lexicografia, Terminologia e Tradução: Relações Textuais, pelo PPG-Letras/UFRGS, como bolsista CAPES. Pós-Graduada em Língua Portuguesa pelo Centro Universitário Barão de Mauá (São José do Rio Preto - SP).
