The human development index (HDI) in Geography classes: an analysis of educational videos on the internet

This article presents an analysis of the use and appropriation of the Human Development Index (HDI) in video classes by Brazilian Geography teachers through the observation of the spatial language used by the videos published on the internet. A sample of 14 video classes published on YouTube with an average of about 15 minutes each was studied. The methodology used is based on the study of representations by content analysis and direct discourse analysis. The results found demonstrate an important dimension to be better understood in relation to Geography and the social indicators that refer to the dimension of social appropriation, ideology and the construction of geographical imaginary. We observe processes of anchoring and objectifying the HDI that refer to mechanisms of symbolic construction of space related to the production of a “psychosphere of geographic space” (SANTOS, 1996), to “social representations of space” (BONFIN, 2012) and “ spaces of representations ”(LEFEBVRE, 2013) relevant to be considered in the processes of construction of geographic knowledge and educational practices in Geography.
