EVOLUTION OF THE FEMALE UNEMPLOYMENT IN THE SOUTHERN REGION OF BRAZIL BETWEEN 2004 AND 2008

This paper describes the evolution of female unemployment in the South for the years 2004 and 2008 using the National Survey by Household Sampling (PNAD), the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), as the database. Analyzes the determinants of changes with respect to unemployment of poor women and non-poor through logarithmic decompositions to municipalities non self-representative, selfrepresentative cities and metropolitan areas. The study revealed that the evolution of the participation of poor women in unemployment in the region, there was so heterogeneous: there was an increase in the municipalities self-representative, due to the behavior of the Economically Active Population (PEA) of group in relation to the PEA region and fall in non self-representative municipalities and metropolitan areas in due to the reduction in the unemployment rate in the group with respect to unemployment in the region. With respect to non-poor women, there was an increased share of total unemployment in the same in all analyzed cities which was mainly driven by rising unemployment rate of those women in the unemployment rate in the region.
