The purpose of this work is to check which variables determine the social and of family agriculture linked to the tobacco activity.The variables used in the survey were obtained in March 2003, by surveys of primary data with the obacco producers in the municipality of Santa Cruz do Sul-RS.Part of these variables was studied using the technique of the factorial analysis by the method of the main components.The other variables (qualitative) were used to help characterization of the profile of this activity.The results obtained have made it possible to conclude that the familiar character of the tobacco activity is positively related to the size of the family, the number of children, the experience and their schooling;To the size of the property and the income from diversification and;The income of tobacco and its cultivated area and the labour hired.The source of income for households comes only from agriculture, although the of the value of the production is not derived from diversification,but of a product that is specific. In spite of this, the cultivation of other products, as well as animal breeding, gives Guarantees to the property with respect to adverse factors such as crop breakage or variation in tobacco prices.
