The inclusion of children with disabilities or multiple disabilities in Brazilian schools has long been debated. This represents a significant challenge for teaching practices, where various obstacles are encountered in the daily classroom routine. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the school trajectories and teaching and learning concepts of children with microcephaly in the municipal Early Childhood Education network in the Metropolitan Region of Natal. The few existing publications in the educational field on this topic highlight the challenges of welcoming and retaining these children in public schools and managing their educational journeys. This is a qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory study based on testimonies collected through semi-structured interviews with four mothers and five teachers of children with microcephaly in early childhood education. The study highlights the unique experiences of this approach and reveals that both teachers and mothers experienced fear due to pedagogical challenges, but the inclusion of these children in classrooms provided rich experiences of involvement, acceptance, peer support, and child development. Thus, that schools can embrace children with microcephaly, but this requires applied knowledge, technique, investment and planning.
the challenges of welcoming and retaining these children in public schools and managing their educational journeys. This is a qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory study based on testimonies collected through semi-structured interviews with four mothers and five teachers of children with microcephaly in early childhood education. The study highlights the unique experiences of this approach, resulting in a booklet with suggestions on inclusion, teaching, and learning for children with microcephaly. The interviews revealed that both teachers and mothers experienced fear due to pedagogical challenges, but the inclusion of these children in classrooms provided rich experiences of inclusion, acceptance, peer support, and child development. Thus, progress has been made, demonstrating that schools can embrace children with microcephaly, but this requires applied knowledge, technique, investment and planning.
