The current classification of the genus Rhamnus L. (Rhamnaceae), according to wood anatomy.
Rhamnus L. is one of the most important members of the Rhamnaceae. Taxonomically complex, it has undergone numerous changes since its establishment. Frangula Mill., Oreoherzogia W.Vent and Ventia Hauenschild are some of the several groups included within its limits, with Frangula being the most well-established as an independent group today. In order to evaluate, from the wood anatomy point of view, the recent modifications made, anatomical details of several species belonging to the old genus Rhamnus found in the literature were investigated. The characteristics analyzed are in accordance with the structural possibilities of the family and are also shared with other genera of Rhamnaceae. Such aspects, although not exclusive, eventually can be useful for its separation. Regarding the internal classification of the genus Rhamnus s.l., the differences observed, mainly in pores arrangement, justify the positioning of Rhamnus s.str. and Frangula as two new genera, originated from the former subgenera Eurhamnus and Frangula, traditionally recognized.
