Falar de Some Like It Hot (1959) de Billie Wilder como um filme queer não é apenas atribuir a esse filme tremendamente engraçado um status avant-la-lettre que ameaça sobrecarregá-lo com o peso de um aparato crítico às vezes sufocante; também serve para marcá-lo como algo profundamente diferente da textura geral do cinema de Wilder. Se Wilder estava interessado em fazer um filme que pudesse de alguma forma contribuir para a revisão de Hollywood, então bastante sombrio e a julgar por outro filme de 1959, como o incoerente Suddenly Last Summer, de Joseph L. Mankiewicz, relato histérico da homossexualidade, é um esforço que parece ter se perdido na comunidade de estudiosos queer.
