This study aims to conduct a systematic literature review with a bibliometric approach regarding studies that have analyzed the financial and social efficiencies of credit unions, including rural ones, using the Proknow-C theoretical intervention instrument. Generally, the data envelopment analysis method with a production approach is the most commonly used for efficiency analysis. However, there is no observed common pattern in the adoption of input and output variables in the models, varying according to the profile, operational area, and objectives of the credit unions. Furthermore, there is no consensus regarding the relationship between efficiency and the size of these institutions, nor whether rural unions are more or less efficient than non-rural ones. Therefore, there is a gap identified for the development of studies that analyze the efficiencies of rural credit unions in Brazil, especially in a social context, as well as regional analyses based on agribusiness dynamics and introducing methodological innovations.
