Cardiovascular risk analysis of users of a basic health unit in a city in southern Brazil

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate cardiovascular risk factors (CVR) and analyze their possible correlations in users who attend a Basic Health Unit in a city in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul - Brazil. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 114 patients aged ≥ 18 and < 60 years. Data on gender, age, ethnicity, smoking, presence of systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) and diabetes mellitus (DM), nutritional parameters of weight, height and waist circumference (WC) were collected to calculate the body mass index. (BMI) and the conicity index (CI). The international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ) was also applied. Results: 88.6% were female and the mean age of the sample was 41.3±11.8 years. The mean BMI was 30.1±6.2 kg/m2. Anthropometrically, no patient was malnourished or at nutritional risk, 28.9% of the participants were overweight, 47.4% were obese, and 65.8% had WC above the proposed cutoffs and 59.6% had CVR by CI. SAH was significantly more present in the study population than DM (P<0.05). There was a correlation between BMI and WC (r=0.846, p<0.05) and between BMI and CI (r=0.293, p<0.05). According to the IPAQ, 69.3% of the participants were very active or active, and there was no correlation with the other CVR factors. WC above the reference values ​​was associated with older age, with the presence of SAH and with HF. Final considerations: The main CVR factors found in the studied sample were SAH, WC and CI above the reference values, overweight and obesity. The presence of CVR assessed by WC was correlated with age over 40 years, SAH and CVR by CI.
