The article analyzes Youth and Adult Education (EJA) within the prison system, which, despite being a fundamental right, is marked by contradictions arising from punitive discourses, penal selectivity, and the precarization of teaching work. It aims to investigate how teachers experience their work in prison institutions in Criciúma, Santa Catarina, considering the impacts of institutional regulation and symbolic violence on their practices. This qualitative study was based on semi-structured interviews with teachers who had worked in prison settings. The analysis was organized around the following categories: precarization of teaching work; institutional and gendered regulation of bodies; discipline and symbolic violence; pedagogical restriction, censorship, and self-censorship; and adaptation of educational practices to material conditions and security routines. The results reveal significant challenges, including institutional restrictions, precarious working conditions, and the absence of specific regulations governing EJA in prison settings. The findings demonstrate that schooling is permeated by practices of control and discipline that limit pedagogical autonomy, subordinate curricular organization to security routines, and reinforce inequalities and punitive rationales. By critically examining these elements, the study contributes to the debate on the right to education in contexts of deprivation of liberty and to the formulation of more equitable public policies.
