The creation of an Academic League of Latin American Philosophy: an experience report

Abstract

This paper aims to report the experiences related to the process of creating the Liga Acadêmica de Filosofia Latino-Americana, a project developed in a campus of Instituto Federal do Paraná, Brazil. We will reflect upon its challenges, outline future perspectives and discuss our philosophical foundations. Academic leagues in Brazil traditionally are associated with higher education, mainly in health courses, in which they integrate activities of teaching, research and extension and any thematical focus. We proposed applying these principles to human sciences, notably in the field of Latin American philosophy. In this experience report we present the action developed by the project in 2024-2025, such as a poetry slam, introductory courses featuring typical dishes of Latin American cuisine, a sport event with Latin American street games, plus activities of teaching and research. We highlight as philosophical foundations of the Liga actions the philosophical categories of exteriority, liberty (liberdade) and amefricanity, reflecting on its application on the project. The creation of the Liga Acadêmica de Filosofia Latino-Americana represents the innovative effort to engage Integrated High School students with discussions on philosophy and Latin American reality.
