This paper analyzes the comic book work of Mozambican author Helena Motta from the 1980s and 1990s as its source to investigate the proximity and tensions between line work, narrative, and printing technologies. The authors seek to emphasize the discussion on line work and authorship through theoretical incursions into the History of the Book and Publishing and in works dedicated to the language of comic books, usually organized within the umbrella that in the Anglophone world has been called Comic Studies. The study pays attention to the specificities of the source in its materiality and to the constitution of textual, imagistic, and editorial repertoires, proposing a historical approach to the object that diverges from the common recourse of readings that seek to be based on the construction and classification of works and authors in semiotic structures.
