The aim of this paper is to analyze the ideological struggle between different social spheres, when the object of discourse is forced labor of Brazilian rural workers, especially slave labor. The empirical material analyzed consists of a text produced by the Pastoral Commission of Land, the Article 149 of the Brazilian Penal Code, and narratives of farmers and agribusiness representatives; all documents dealing with slave labor. The analysis shows distinct and antagonistic socio-historical places in our society which guide the production and circulation of meanings within the debate on contemporary slavery.Downloads
