Abstract

The condition of the Galician language has undergone significant change in the period since the establishment of the Galician autonomía in 1981. On the one hand, it has been possible to slow, at least partially, the interruption of intergenerational transmission, which had intensified under Francoism. On the other hand, the institutionalisation of the language has created a situation that has brought new opportunities, but also fresh challenges. The “nomativization” process of the language has been directed by regional governments which deny the very existence of sociolinguistic conflict in Galicia, which have not adopted a determined policy of real recuperation of usage and speakers, and which have recently taken up the discourse of Spanish linguistic nationalism.
