Abstract

This article aims to examine the relationship between tyranny and political philosophy in Machiavelli based on an observation by Leo Strauss, for whom the Florentine secretary, in his best-known work, would have erased the distinction between tyranny and principality. From my point of view, what Machiavelli does is to reconfigure this distinction, as well as relaunch it with its own theoretical ends in mind. In trying to demonstrate my interpretation, I suggest, without going deeper into the discussion, that regarding the relationship between tyranny and political philosophy, it is possible to see a convergence between the works of Leo Strauss and Machiavelli.
