A Turquia vem atravessando uma grande transformação em termos de política externa há pouco mais de uma década, quando da ascensão do Partido da Justiça e do Desenvolvimento (AKP). Alicerçado na “Teoria da Profundidade Estratégica”, do acadêmico Ahmet Davutoğlu, o partido tratou de corrigir os rumos da diplomacia turca, que sempre esteve balizada na aliança com os Estados Unidos e em um distanciamento com os países vizinhos, a despeito de alguns desvios pontuais. Através do estudo da bibliografia especializada, dos discursos oficiais e de dados econômico-comerciais, o presente artigo tratará das modificações por que passou a Turquia em suas relações internacionais, enfatizando os aspectos regionais. É do escopo deste trabalho, portanto, averiguar as causas que possibilitaram essa reorganização estratégica, que se produziram a partir de mudanças no sistema internacional e na economia turca. Essa investigação se faz premente na medida em que recrudesce a disputa de grandes potências pela influência geopolítica no Oriente Médio, Cáucaso e Ásia Central, regiões justamente onde as lideranças turcas apregoam que seu país reúne as capacidades necessárias para assumir um papel proeminente.
