A crítica de Leo Strauss ao historicismo: o exemplo de R. G. Collingwood

Resumo

Um dos aspectos nucleares da reflexão filosófico-política de Leo Strauss é, certamente, a crítica ao fenômeno do historicismo. Na visão do autor, o historicismo é a tendência dominante do pensamento contemporâneo, cujo efeito último é a degradação da filosofia política e o entorpecimento da capacidade humana de asseverar juízos políticos. Este artigo tem por objetivo reapresentar a crítica de Strauss ao filósofo e historiador britânico Robin George Collingwood (1889-1943), considerado um dos exemplares mais emblemáticos do historicismo em sua versão radicalizada. Para tanto, cumpre explicitar, em linhas gerais: (i) a definição do historicismo na visão straussiana; (ii) as principais teses de Collingwood e sua compreensão acerca da história e da filosofia; (iii) as objeções de Strauss; e, por fim, (iv) a repercussão da crítica straussiana entre alguns comentadores e intérpretes. Nessa apresentação, veremos de que maneira Strauss se opõe ao britânico e em que medida poderíamos dar razões, ou não, a ele.
