Abstract

This work, from a critical point of view, identified with political ecology, aims to contribute to the theme of environmental conflicts considering the necessity to understand the actions of certain particular agents that interfere in the socio-economic and political-environment fields. As the object of this study, were selected the Valley of the Rio Doce Company (CVRD), currently Valley SA, for its action in over 30 countries which has caused many environmental impacts. Thus, we analyzed the document entitled "Sustainable Development Policy", decomposing the elements that constitute it and seeking, when it is possible, to reprove the present affirmations in the document with concrete cases.

José Arnaldo Ribeiro Junior, Universidade Federal do Maranhão

Atualmente é Membro do Grupo de Estudos Desenvolvimento, Modernidade e Meio Ambiente (GEDMMA) e do Núcleo de Estudos e Pesquisa do Sindicalismo (NEPS). Professor do Programa de Educação Pré-Vestibular Comunitário para Jovens Afro-Descendentes AGADÁ. Tem habilidade na área de Geografia, com ênfase em Geografia Humana; Atua principalmente nos seguintes temas: Ensino e Epistemologia da Geografia, Marxismo e Meio Ambiente.

Horácio Antunes Sant'Ana Júnior, Universidade Federal do Maranhão

Possui graduação em Ciências Sociais pela Universidade Federal de Goiás (1986), mestrado em Educação Escolar Brasileira pela Universidade Federal de Goiás (1993) e doutorado em Ciências Humanas - Sociologia - pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (2002). Atualmente atua na Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA), como professor adjunto IV do Departamento de Sociologia e Antropologia (DESOC); Vice-Coordenador do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências Sociais (PPGCSoc); professor permanente do Programa de Pós-Graduação Políticas Públicas (PPGPP); e líder do Grupo de Estudos: Desenvolvimento, Modernidade e Meio Ambiente (GEDMMA), registrado do Diretório dos Grupos de Pesquisa do CNPq. Tem experiência na área de Sociologia, com ênfase em Movimentos Sociais e Meio Ambiente, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: modernidade, desenvolvimento, projetos de desenvolvimento, meio ambiente, conflitos socioambientais.
