Abstract

Geography is the knowledge that makes it possible to understand and analyze the world in which one lives, therefore, to abstract and consolidate knowledge, it must be associated with everyday life in society, incorporating the concepts with the students' experience. Therefore, this article aims to analyze the use of music for the development of Geography themes and competences for students of basic education of a state school, located in the city of Belo Horizonte, understanding how they build a critical view about the contemporary society. The methodology was based on the analysis of activities applied to high school, regular and EJA students, which are based on the skills of reading, writing and interpretation of music lyrics of the Rap and Reggae genres which address themes of capitalism and globalization. After the application of the activities, the analyzed results show that the students were able to develop analytical skills, critical thinking and the dialogue between musical art and geography, through essays that addressed the ills and benefits of capitalism, and, in addition, the different impacts of globalization on central and peripheral countries.
