Abstract

In this paper, I will discuss Blake’s problematic relationship with the publisher Robert Cromek and how this conflict gave rise to the main works of Blake in 1809: the painting dedicated to the pilgrims of Chaucer. Second, I will detail how the exhibition 1809 is essential to understand the vision that Blake had about his own production. His Descriptive Catalogue, which translation is published here, is a fundamental text to understand the artist’s relationship with his work and the commercial and cultural environment in which he lived.
