Racial and gender discrimination: training black women in rural areas to cope

The aim of this article is to report on the experience of running an extension course in municipality Tianguá, which dealt with the issue of tackling racism and discrimination against women in a rural context. This issue is relevant to promoting strategies for confronting it and encouraging women’s social participation in order to transform situations of oppression. The course had 26 participants and took place over 5 meetings. We adopted a participatory and dialogical methodology based on interactions between the participants through culture circles. The results were the articulation between women and men from different segments and local social groups, the participants’ identification with the issues addressed and their self-declaration as black women, and the realization that actions like these are necessary in a social context where rural black women present specific vulnerabilities.
