Determinats of the occupation of the family nucleus composed in the rural area of Brazil

Brazilian agriculture has presented deep changes in relation to agricultural employment during the decade of 90. In order to investigate what was the impact of this process in determining the occupancy in nuclear families, this article analyzes the probability of occupation of husbands and wives in the Brazilian rural labor market. The data used in this article was obtained from the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD) for 2008 with all the features of its complex sampling design (weight, strata and primary sampling unit) for the rural area of Brazil. Additionally, this article makes use of the Seemingly Unrelated Bivariate Probit model (BIPROBIT) to determine if there is interaction of the characteristics that determine the occupation of husbands and wives in the rural labor market in Brazil. The results showed that there is interaction of the characteristics that determine the occupation of the rural nuclear family but that those relevant for this occupation vary considerably depending on whether take into account husband or wife.
