Abstract

Natural disasters are the consequence of natural or anthropogenic eventsin a specific place or region, affecting people and causing damage to materials,humans, and the environment. This paper aims to analyze the flashfloods occurring in the south region of Brazil in the period of 1980 to 2009.Records of these events were obtained by State Civil Defense Authority toobserve the preferential period for these occurrences and the area mostaffected by events. The results shows that Santa Catarina state is the mostaffected by flash flood events, followed by Rio Grande do Sul and Paranástates. It was observed also the most intense events occurred in the year1992, in Rio Grande do Sul, 2008 in Santa Catarina and 2009 in Paranáand affected several cities (174, 167 and 37, respectively). The mostly emergencysituations by flash flood occurred both El Niño and La Niña periods(years), in the different seasons: winter (Rio Grande do Sul), summer (SantaCatarina) and spring (Paraná).

Possui graduação em Meteorologia pela Universidade Federal de Pelotas (1998), mestrado em Sensoriamento Remoto e Meteorologia pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (2003), doutorado em Meteorologia pela Universidade de São Paulo (2008). Tem experiência na área de Geociências, com ênfase em biometeorologia, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: biometeorologia, conforto térmico humano, qualidade do ar, meio ambiente, saúde pública . Piloto Privado de aviao.
