What is Digital Preservation?
As many important digital collections are being built outside libraries and archives of different organizations, or being published directly on the internet, and with the rise of information production in digital format, it has been questioned the importance of guaranteeing the availability and preservation of these collections and information for a long period of time.
Digital objects cannot be left in obsolete formats to be transferred to digital repositories after long periods of forgetment, since there is a risk that the technology cannot recover the information. This concern involves both data producers and information holdings.
Digital preservation constitutes the mechanisms that allow the storage of data from digital repositories, guaranteeing the perpetuity of content. To reach this goal, digital objects must be comprehended and managed in various levels: as a physical object, as a logical encoding, as conceptual objects or as having meaning to humans, and as a set of essential elements that should be preserved to offer the future users the essence of the object.
Digital preservation is the longest and the last part of the cycle of management of digital objects. Are necessary, not only mechanisms to maintenance and data recuperation, in case of accidental loss to protect the media and its content, but also strategies and mechanisms to guarantee its accessibility and authenticity throughout time, that may require collaboration between different financiers and good practices of licensing, metadata and documentation, before applying technical actions. Is important to consider the preservation from the necessity of ensuring access and recuperation of scientific information as fundamental to academic research.
