Access to information laws in many countries include requirements regarding the transparency of meetings between public authorities and social and business sectors. However, there are cases in which legislation allows information to be left out of public scrutiny, which suggests the influence of factors such as attitudes towards democracy. We sought, through document analysis, relationships between indicators of trust in democracy and transparency laws of open meetings in eight selected Latin American countries. The results suggest that democratic values can play a relevant role among the factors capable of contributing to the increase in the rigor of legislation and its enforcement. It can be concluded that there is a possible relationship between the existence of access to information law, transparency and support for democracy in the indexes of the analyzed countries.
