Electoral governance in Latin America

Latin America witnessed the third wave of democracy during especially the second half of the 20th century. During this period, most countries in the region replaced authoritarian regimes with democratic regimes based, among other bases, on periodic elections. But for each country to be able to hold elections, it is necessary to define the electoral forms and rules and, just as important, the bodies responsible for organizing, administering and ratifying the elections. Understanding how institutions are organized is a step towards understanding the consolidation of democracies. In this sense, the work summarizes how the institutions responsible for guiding elections in Latin American democracies are organized, describing the existing electoral bodies and classifying the models according to the dimensions of Electoral Governance.
