Reading the past through the present: Findes' narrative on the Grand Industrial Projects (1970-1983)

The article investigates the institutional memory of the Federation of Industries of the State of Espírito Santo (Findes) regarding economic development policies during the civil-military dictatorship (1970-1983). Analyzing the governments of Arthur Carlos Gerhardt Santos, Élcio Álvares, and Eurico Rezende, it aims to fill a gap in Capixaba historiography concerning the construction of the positive memory of the 1964 coup and the dictatorship. The hypothesis suggests that Findes contributed to this memory by asserting that the state benefited from the coup due to the implementation of Grand Industrial Projects. The methodology includes historical-sociological analysis, multiple documentary sources, and oral history, based on the testimony of Arthur Carlos Gerhardt Santos. The article is divided into four parts: theoretical discussion on memory and elites; narratives of regional elites on the coup and the dictatorship; reading the past through the present, with content analysis of the Revista Indústria Capixaba (1970-1983) by Findes; and concluding remarks emphasizing the consolidation of the positive version of the dictatorship in the Capixaba political imaginary.
