The Século XXI: Journal of Social Sciences, scientific publication of the Graduate Program in Social Sciences of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), presents in this issue the dossier “Culture and Differences.” The articles assembled here have in common the perception of difference as a set of socially and culturally constructed representations always immerse in power relations. In that sense, to tackle difference is to understand it as a circumstantial element, in constant movement and always relational, with certain particularisms that are constituted as hegemonic, neutral, or universal. More specifically, the articles in this dossier provide us with analyses that pay attention to dissident and subaltern experiences, in addition to reflecting about the circumstances of the production of dominant narratives. These reflections do not lose sight of the hybridity, the decenterings, and the contradictions that mark all processes of social identification. The texts compiled here move through themes such as: the artistic production of literature and filmic narratives; boundaries; immigration; whiteness and the formation of the middle-class; in addition to the production of social theory.Downloads
