“With sugar and with affection”: the invisibilized work of sewing women.

Different knowledges and practices such as healing, midwifery, cooking, embroidery and sewing were reserved for women in subordinate spaces. Despite having become synonymous with female isolation, the domestic space has over the years been organized and governed by the women themselves. Thus, becoming a locus of knowledge, even if not evident. This article deals specifically with sewing know-how and the aspects that make it invisible in the world of work. For this, we approach the process of regulating the seamstress profession in a dialogue with the narratives of the interlocutors and the theories developed in the socio-anthropological scope of the trades and professions. Among the aspects that subject such know-how to the informal scope, we observe that the intermittent task of caring is an important starting point to understand this universe. We also discussed how knowledge and practices, care, affection and emotions are confused with the role of women in the world.Downloads
