Abstract

This article is a result of the deepening of part of a broader research about the development of the Sociology of Education in Brazil which has shown concerns in order to characterize the academic production of knowledge in this area, and place the task of extending these concerns. Our goal is to analyze the research groups that engage directly or indirectly to the Sociology of Education in the country, take the Northeast as the main analytical focus. The research groups registered in the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development directory were taken as sources of information about institutionalizing itself Sociology of Education in the Northeast region of Brazil. The results indicated a field still in consolidation, riddled with contradictions, as an effective presence of research groups related to the Postgraduate Program in Social Sciences in contrast to the few lines of these programs focused on education.
