Relation between agricultural cooperatives and the Gross Domestic Agricultural Product of Santa Catarina municipalities

The economic results of agriculture in Brazil have contributed to the expansion of the sector of agricultural cooperatives, which appear to solve financial problems and outflow of production faced by producers. Thus, the objective of the study is to analyze the relationship between the Agricultural Gross Domestic Product, a measure of rural production, and the presence of cooperatives in the municipalities of Santa Catarina. To this end, the data were collected from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), 2017 Agricultural Census and Federal Revenue. The methods were based on the descriptive data analysis, tests of means, Pearson’s correlation and multiple linear regression. The results obtained showed that Santa Catarina’s agricultural cooperatives and their interaction with rural producers and establishments raise the agricultural production of the municipalities, which evidences collaboration from cooperativism to regional development. Therefore, the study contributes to discussions about the potential of agricultural cooperatives to boost local and regional economic development.
