Analysis of the financial efficiency of the largest Brazilian agricultural cooperatives from 2011 to 2017 through the data envelopment analysis

Abstract

This study compared the financial efficiency in the period from 2011 to 2017 of the largest agricultural cooperatives in Brazil. For the efficiency analysis, the Data Envelopment Analysis model was used to compare the overall efficiency, technical efficiency and scale efficiency of decision-making units. The choice of inputs and outputs of the model was based on the profitability analysis method and application of the I-O Variable Stepwise Exhaustive Complete method. The results of the efficiencies were submitted to an analysis of variance by repeated measures. It was found that the overall efficiency of the cooperative organizations performed best after a critical period in 2015 and 2016. The improvement was caused by the improved efficiency of scale efficiency. The technical efficiency did not have significant changes and presents with a good average in the period. The low efficiency of scale indicates a point to be improved for increase of the total efficiency.
