Virtual reality as a physical training protocol in therapeutic interventions: systematic review

Objectives: The aim of this review is to report the findings in the literature about the properties of training with Virtual Reality, as a therapeutic alternative to improve the quality of life of patients with pathologies, such as: stroke, heart attack, rheumatoid arthritis and Parkinson's. Methods: After setting a thorough definition of the criteria to compose this review, a search was performed on virtual libraries (PubMed, Scielo, Medline, Science direct, MDPI- Open access journals e Bireme) to obtain articles that could attempt to the pre-stablished features, from December 2022 until January 2023. The key-words used were: ‘Physical activity’, ‘virtual reality training’, and ‘Quality of life’. Results: The results obtained evidence that virtual reality can contribute to improve aspects related to quality of life, including beneficial impacts on symptoms of psychological disorders (depression and anxiety), improvement in mobility and balance, and attenuation of pain and indicators of inflammatory process. Final Considerations: The use of virtual reality as a physical activity tool in rehabilitation therapies for individuals with neuromuscular and rheumatic pathologies results in a positive effect on mobility, risk of falls, resistance and quality of life of patients, characterizing a technological alternative that can be used in combination with conventional training.
