Objective: To investigate the prevalence and factors associated with negative self-rated of health among college students. Methods: Cross-sectional study, conducted on 450 students from a community college in western Santa Catarina. A questionnaire was applied to obtain sociodemographic information (gender, age, monthly income and skin color), self-rated of health, number of diagnosed diseases, level of physical activity and use of tobacco and alcohol. Data were treated using descriptive statistics and comparisons between genders were made using the Mann-Whitney U test. Logistic regression was used to identify the factors associated with negative self perception of health, considering Odds Ratio (OR) values and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results: The prevalence of negative self-rated of health in college students was 32.4%, being higher in women (36.4%). Three or more diseases (OR: 2.79; 95% CI: 1.26 - 6.19), weekly alcohol intake (OR: 3.15; 95% CI: 1.54 - 6.44) and low levels of physical activity (OR: 2.54; 95% CI: 1.62 - 3.98) were associated with negative self-rated health. Conclusion: Three out of 10 college students had negative self-rated of health. Presenting multiple diseases and negative lifestyle habits, such as low levels of physical activity and weekly consumption of alcoholic beverages, contribute to accentuate the negative self-rated of health. Thus, awareness-raising actions about the importance of healthy lifestyle habits are needed for the university population in order to increase physical activity levels and reduce alcohol consumption.
