Abstract

Acute kidney injuriy (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are two entities associated with structural and functional damage of the kidney, whose incidence has increased in recent years, which has aroused attention to possible new risk factors and etiologies.  Given the increasing use of pesticides in Brazil, one of the hypotheses studied is that exposure to these chemicals is related to the development of kidney diseases.  This study aimed to identify in the literature how the relationship between exposure to pesticides and the development of renal failure is.  It consists of an integrative review of scientific articles published in PubMed between the years 2010 and 2020 through the descriptors “renal insufficiency” and “agrochemicals”, of free access in complete form and research carried out in humans.  From these selection criteria, 20 scientific articles were selected, which were organized in a review framework.  The analysis of the articles generated the elaboration of three categories of discussion: terminologies used to describe renal disease associated with pesticides, epidemiological data related to exposure to pesticides as a risk factor for CKD and pathophysiology of renal damage caused by pesticides.  It was concluded that the data are insufficient to affirm the direct causal association between exposure to pesticides and renal failure. However, it was found that exposure to pesticides is a triggering factor of chronic renal disease.
