The ‘third space’ of Contemporary Indigenous Art

The text analyzes the emergence of Contemporary Indigenous Art as a field that contributes to repositioning Indigenous peoples within the Brazilian imaginary. In contrast to the anthropological tradition, which privileged artistic productions linked to so-called “traditional” contexts, the article highlights the growing presence of Indigenous artists in urban settings. These artists operate within a “third space,” a hybrid zone situated between the traditional and the contemporary, in which they assert new forms of identity, expression, and agency, thereby expanding notions of indigeneity in Brazil. Finally, the text presents an interview conducted by the author with the artist Jaider Esbell in 2014, revealing key aspects of his artistic practice and thought.
