Abstract

“The world is full of objects, more or less interesting; I do not wish to add any more. I prefer, simply, to state the existence of things in therms of time and/or place.” This statement belongs to conceptual artist Douglas Huebler. It’s important for me as a reference within the creation of an artwork – a kind of “voiced” object named “Móvel da memória: estratégia de exposição” – constructed and exhibited in 2006, at the Universitary Museum of Art (MunA) of Federal University of Uberlândia, Minas Gerais State. The artwork is formed by an old chair, in which is connected one set of sound system and headphones, that reproduces my talk about earlier artworks I’ve installed at MUnA, since1998. In that speech, I asked to the listener that she or he did relationships between the imagined images of the talk with that images that she or he was really observing – came from the other artists artworks, exposed together with “Móvel da memória”, at the same show. The purpose of this text is to analyse the creation of this “voiced” object. In this text, I think about memory and production of archives, as operational concepts of the object, as well as the imagination, because its fruition by the listener had allowed several interpretations of the described images. I also purpose relationship between “Móvel da memória” and Aby Warburg’s Atlas Mnemosyne. I use the thoughts of Fausto Colombo and Sigrid Weigel
