Cultural competence of nurses in caring for women-mothers and their hospitalized children

Abstract

Objetivo: Describir el proceso de desarrollo de la competencia cultural de los enfermeros en el cuidado de la mujer-madre y de su hijo hospitalizado, a la luz de los constructos del Modelo de Competencia Cultural para el Cuidado de Enfermería (Nurses' Cultural Competence Care Model). Método: Estudio cualitativo realizado mediante entrevistas semiestructuradas y análisis temático con clasificación jerárquica descendente, apoyado por el software IRAMUTEQ®. Resultados: Participaron 20 enfermeros que brindaban atención directa e indirecta a la mujer-madre y a su hijo. Se identificaron seis clases temáticas diferenciadas, denominadas de acuerdo con el marco teórico adoptado. Conclusión: El desarrollo de la competencia cultural de los enfermeros comienza con una disposición genuina para brindar una atención culturalmente sensible a mujeres-madres y a sus hijos pertenecientes a diversos contextos étnicos y culturales. Este proceso requiere conciencia de la propia cultura, la búsqueda activa de conocimientos culturales y la recopilación hábil de información para fundamentar una valoración de enfermería adecuada, superando las barreras estructurales y de comunicación que surgen en la interacción entre el enfermero y la mujer-madre con su hijo hospitalizado.

Author Biographies

Karin Rosa Persegona Ogradowski, Universidade Federal do Paraná

She holds a degree in Nursing from the Federal University of Paraná (2004), a Master's degree in Nursing with an emphasis on Pain and Pediatrics from the Federal University of Paraná (2008), and a Doctorate from the Postgraduate Program in Nursing at the Federal University of Paraná (2023). She is the Coordinator of the Undergraduate Nursing Program at Faculdades Pequeno Príncipe - FPP, which has International Accreditation from the Arcu-Sur System at the Mercosur level and associated countries. She is a Founding Member and Supervising Professor of the Academic League of Pediatric Nursing (LAENP-FPP) in synergy with the Pequeno Príncipe Hospital. She is a Professor in the Undergraduate Medicine Program (FPP), with an emphasis on public health. She is the Pedagogical Coordinator and Professor of the Multiprofessional Specialization Courses in Palliative Care and in Pediatric Nursing and Neonatal Intensive Care at FPP. Member of the Research Group on Health Education (PENSA - FPP), the Study Group on Revisions at FPP, and the Center for Studies and Research in Human Nursing Care - NEPECHE UFPR. Member of the Board of Directors of the Brazilian Nursing Association, Paraná section - ABEN PR, 2022-2025 term, serving as a reference and consultant on the National Curriculum Guidelines for Nursing education. She has publications in the areas of Maternal and Child Nursing, Child and Adolescent Health, Health Education, Active and Innovative Methodologies, Nursing Education, Professional Competencies, and Palliative Care.

 

Davi Paula da Silva, Universidade Federal do Paraná

Graduating in Nursing from Faculdades Pequeno Príncipe (FPP), through the University for All Program (ProUni) of the Ministry of Education. Exchange student in the Bachelor's Degree in Nursing at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB), in Portugal. Postgraduate student in Geriatric and Gerontological Nursing and in Emergency and Urgent Care Nursing at FACULESTE (Distance Learning). Scientific Initiation Researcher in the project "Evaluation of the effects of pesticides using in vivo and in vitro models" funded by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). Member of the Academic Board of the Undergraduate Nursing Course and Student Representative on the Higher Administration Council of Faculdades Pequeno Príncipe. Scientific Director and Co-founder of the Academic League of Pediatric Nursing (LAENP-FPP). Nursing Tutor at the NGO Médicos de Rua and participant in the Review Study Group. Currently, she conducts research in the areas of Maternal and Child Care, Vaccine Hesitation, Toxicology, and Social Determinants of Health, with an emphasis on cultural, ethnic-racial, gender, and sexuality issues.

Tatiane Herreira Trigueiro, Universidade Federal do Paraná

Registered Nurse graduated from the Federal University of Paraná (2005-2009), Master's degree in Nursing from the Postgraduate Program in Nursing at the Federal University of Paraná (2010-2011), PhD in Health Sciences (Nursing) from the School of Nursing at the University of São Paulo (USP), Specialist in Obstetric Nursing from the Uninter International University Center (2013-2014), currently a member of the Center for Studies, Research and Extension in Human Nursing Care (NEPECHE) at UFPR, 2017-present. She coordinated the Postgraduate Course in Gynecological and Obstetric Nursing at Universidade Positivo from 2015 to 2016. Currently, she is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Nursing in the Maternal-Infant area at UFPR, in the Postgraduate Program in Nursing at UFPR, and in the Postgraduate Program in Health Care Practice at UFPR. She has coordinated the Extension Project "Nursing Consultation for pregnant women from 37 weeks onwards" since 2018. She has experience in the area of ​​Women's Health Nursing with an emphasis on Obstetrics.

 

Marilene Loewen Wall, Universidade Federal do Paraná

She holds a Bachelor's and Licentiate degree in Nursing from the Federal University of Paraná (1991), a Specialization in Obstetric Nursing (1995), a Master's degree in Nursing from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (2000), and a Doctorate in Nursing from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (2008). She has been a professor at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) since 1993, teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate (Master's and Doctorate) levels, as well as in the Professional Master's Program in Nursing. She is a member of the Health, Work and Innovation Research Group - GSTI/UFPR and coordinates extension projects. Her research focuses on Nursing, with an emphasis on Obstetric Nursing, primarily addressing the following themes: nursing care models, health and nursing care processes, health policies and practices, nursing education, and women's health. Member of the Technical Opinion Committee of Coren/PR since 2025. Head of the Nursing Department at UFPR from 2009 to 2011. Served as Director of Nursing at HC-UFPR from 2011 to 2015 and as head of the Nursing Division of the HC/UFPR/EBSERH Hospital Complex from 2015 to 2017.
