Abstract

Objective: this study of case qualitative has the aim to understand the meaning of aging and working for elderly street peddlers around the Paulista School of Nursing. Method: through interview, the meaning of old/getting olde/elderly was investigated together with the meaning of work to two elderly who remained working as street peddlers despite being retired. Results: with these results we concluded that despite reaching the age of retirement, the subjects continued to work due to financial and existing needs. The subjects stressed that the main reasons they were still working was to maintain independence and have a feeling of worth to the society even at their old age. Conclusion: this study has prompted reflection on the need to include this issue, aging and working elderlies, in nursing care services to the older people
